Development of a sample collector device able to access hard-to-reach areas using a hexacopter drone

ABOUT THE PROJECT

01 / Abstract

Nowadays, numerous researchers around the world devote part of their work to the collecting of samples in order to develop researches, which can increase the product efficiency (mainly food and medicinal products). However, it can be affirmed that one of the major problems of these studies is related to the difficulty to handle the tools that are used to collect the objects of studying which will be analyzed.

Although sample collection, mainly of botanical materials, may seem like a simple activity, it is actually an arduous task, so consequently, the phytological, medicinal, geological, agronomic and food studies do not develop progressively. In this way, this project intends to use a multirotor to collect samples, especially the botanicals specimens, through an electromechanical cutter device, which was developed and coupled under a drone.

Currently the assembling of the UAV has been completed, and it is working perfectly. The mechanical system, which has been printed in a 3D printer, and the electrical system has been finished, consequently the drone is able to collect samples.

02 / Introduction

Drones are devices that were elaborated with purpose of accomplish specific tasks in a fast way, which normally are difficult to reach directly by humans beings. On the other hand, botanic aims to study the vegetables to define their characteristic in general. In this way, a lot of researchers around the world search to find solutions for huge problems through this biology area. Phytology, in general, aims: contribute to the formation of a fauna profile in a specific area, classify some inventory’s species, and collaborate to the medicine and toxic plants development consequently to the agronomy progress, which is the biggest Brazilian economic source. Nowadays the acquisition of study objects, which is essential for some research and economic activities development, is big problem for botanical studies, because the methods that are used today take so much time, they are dangerous process, inefficient and also so much expensive in some specific cases, as in the agriculture. If we consider that a farmer is owner of 10 thousands hectares, uses a farm truck to collect samples and needs to collect one sample per soy hectare in each months during four months – period of soy cultivation -, he is going to destroy approximately 2.8% of each hectare, it corresponds to a loss of U$33,85 per hectare. As this farmer I owner of 10 thousand hectare, he is going to lost 340 thousands of dollars in four months. In Brazil, it corresponds to 1.3 million reais, or 435 F550 drones.
